The Abolitionist Movement was a cause of the Civil War because It was an effort to end slavery in a nation that valued personal freedom and believed "all men are created equal." The movement had a goal as to nothing short of immediate and instantaneous ending of slavery. The abolitionist movement was a cause of the Civil War because it was an attempt by the white abolitionist, John Brown to start an armed slave revolt 1859 by seizing a United States Virginia. Brown's raid, was escorted by 20 men in his party, was defeated by a detachment of U.S Marines led by Robert Lee. John Brown had originally asked Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass both which he had met in his earlier years as an abolitionist in Springfield Massachusetts to join him in his raid, but Tubman was prevented by illness, and Douglass declined, as he believed Brown's plan would fail.
